For as long as I've been in this business people have complained about Michael Lucas, the porn maker based in New York. Lucas, a self-made success story, is a rarity in the porn world: he went from being the product to making the product. Lucas started as an escort and porn performer and did something that doesn't often happen: he transitioned to not only direct porn, but to own his own porn company. Some of the more creative porn on the market today comes from Michael Lucas who clearly views himself as a creative artist who happens to make his art in the porn world.
Lucas has never been afraid of being outspoken and he is brilliant at getting free publicity to promote himself and his projects. Remember when the unknown guy came forward claiming he'd had sex with Clay Aiken (before Clay came out). Within days of the news, Michael had signed him to make porn. How about the big "conflict" that arose between former Lucas exclusive Chad Hunt and current Lucas exclusive Ben Andrews over who had the bigger dick? Cat-calling erupted at a Lucas promotion at a Virgin Megastore and of course Lucas sold more product.
Lucas, because he knows how to work the media to get free exposure, is often dismissed as simply doing any and everything for publicity, but I've read his blog entires and followed him enough to know that simply isn't true. The way most of us survive and thrive in the porn industry is to NOT ruffle the wrong feathers. If we disagree, we are silent. If we find ourselves in a delicate situation, we calculate how this might improve/hurt video sales. Lucas, on the other hand, perhaps because he has based himself 3000 miles away from the beast of southern California porn, and perhaps also because of his Russian Jewish heritage, has never been silent. He is an outspoken Zionist and has, more than once, condemned the Muslim religion as a threat to the world, not a legitimate way to view your god. I don't agree with him on many issues, but I greatly admire his unflinching determination to express an opinion even if it might hurt his bottom line.
It is made all the more impressive as he is often the subject of very mean-spirited negative comments from those inside the industry. When Lucas won a record 14 awards at GayVN some time ago, some of the audience actually walked out while Lucas was speaking. And so it wasn't shocking to read that Lucas got "in trouble" at the GayVN awards this past weekend in San Francisco. Lucas was correctly outraged that an industry event that was recognizing persons who have opposed child pornography would also allow Brent Corrigan to present at the same awards show. Corrigan made porn when he was underage several years ago and rather than being driven out of the industry, he became a major player, even starting his own porn company. [Read our 2006 blog entry on Corrigan here.] Apparently Lucas tried to get Corrigan removed from the program but something went wrong and when Corrigan appeared on the stage, Lucas bolted to the stage to protest. [Read a somewhat biased report of the evening here.]
Talk about taking your outrage directly into the belly of the beast, this was it. The very people who made Brent Corrigan a star even when they should have known better were sitting in the audience. Lucas got to not only confront Corrigan, but also challenge GayVN and the entire industry in a very public way at a show aimed at making the industry look good. Of course Lucas is being ridiculed again for his actions, but for me it is a reminder that Michael Lucas increasingly appears to be the conscience of our industry. Does he love attention? No doubt he does. Does he know how to make stands that benefit his business? Hello?! But the porn industry needs more people like Michael Lucas who are willing to ruffle some feathers and not just choose to "get along."
The porn industry is suffering for many reasons and one reason is self-inflicted as many key players act as if they're running a fiefdom and not making a creative product that should reward consumers with legit entertainment. Furthermore, we make a controversial product, whether it is vanilla love-making or hard-core bareback, substantial numbers of the population think we should not be allowed to express ourselves. Making porn in America is a political act and to deny this fact by remaining silent is really not seeing the bigger picture. Michael Lucas gets this and I hope he keeps on making great porn AND offending some with his various points of view.
