As Keith recently mentioned, I'm in the midst of moving on from Cruising for Sex after almost nine years. Chances are I'll be doing some part-time haunting but for many reasons I'm looking for a new M-F/9-5. Health care plays its part because it's so hard for small businesses to get group coverage and almost impossible if the employees wish to reside in different states. But that's just one piece of a completely fucked up health care system. There's a bit of sex-fatigue motivating me to move on, too. Soon I will not have to sit down at my desk each morning and first thing look at and approve extremely graphic photos. My primary personal motivation for moving on is common enough for all of us -- I need to go learn and do new things and find something at which I can be really excellent. In the short term, the next four or five years, it's likely I'll be doing something similar to what I do for Keith: books and cash management, dealing with benefits, and all manner of things administrative and project coordination related, and supporting a small business owner or exec. It's not a dynamic I dislike, the tremendous trust someone invests in me to make sure the bills are paid and the money keeps coming in. That part of my relationship with Keith, the trust, and my employer before him has been the most rewarding thing I've experienced since I started working at fifteen years old (twenty-one years ago, wow). For $2.90 an hour! In the long term, I'm heading back to finish my degree, or a degree. I have a few years before I've met some financial goals and I can return part-time without going into debt. In that time I'll figure out exactly what I want but it's not likely I'll finish my BA in English. Right now my brain's a bit too irrationally exuberant -- I'm gonna be an astronaut! Or a cowboy!

The search for a new position has been underway for a couple months now. This job market is brutal and though managing CFS is no different than managing any other small business, and the projects and skills needed to keep it going day-to-day are no different than those at the banks, ad agencies, garment manufacturers, etc. where I've worked, some folks I've interviewed with believe that adult business automatically equals illegitimate. Even after talking nuts and bolts of accounting procedures or describing programming projects we've pulled together I've still left interviews with the "yeah, but it's porn and any old thing just makes money when it comes to sex..." vibe. Maybe a decade ago but the online market has long been saturated with video, pictorial and hookup sites. And the nature of the Internet is the-next-greatest-thing is just a few months away so count on any explosion of popularity to be a blip and then you better work your ass off to create and recreate over and over a space where the remaining community stays happy -- the retention and slow build is where the hard work really lies.

Of course some interviewers are simply convinced that porn is crime (*sigh* it's our "sex is bad" culture) and no matter how spiffy my Sunday-goin'-to-interview suit is they're not going to see it otherwise.
