Yes, I’m defensive about this but if HIV positive guys like me don’t speak up then assholes like the person who submitted this comment keep people in a state of irrational fear. He’s right that you should wear a rubber if safe sex is a priority. But it’s the duty of each individual to weigh the risks and then make his choice about what kind of play he’ll engage in. Grow up and take responsibility for your own body -- don’t insist that the rest of the world should create an environment you deem safe for sex. And one more note to the asshole: poz does not equate to desperate. People like this fellow really need to spend some time around HIV positive people and perhaps he can see them as human again and treat them accordingly.

For a change, something entirely personal...

I’ve met someone who excites me in a way I haven’t felt in a very long time. I was preparing a newsletter today and went browsing recent submissions to the Cruiser Gallery to put this sampling together for you. Let’s talk about race issues for a minute. Don’t worry. This isn’t a political rant.

I approved this comment last August for a Bally Total Fitness:

“I heard that CPD took two guys out after a black employee pointed them out for playing in the sauna.”

And then today a comment was submitted in response:

“Ha what difference did it make that it was a black employee?”

I deleted it not just because we’ve always kept the Sex Listings as a guide book and not a back-and-forth conversation, but because the race of the employee does matter. It matters because there is at least that one person at that Bally Total Fitness who is a threat to cruisers. Unless the entire staff is black, which I can’t know unless someone comments, this is simply descriptive information that helps cruisers narrow down which staff member(s) to be particularly cautious around. Perhaps the person who submitted the comment included the reference to race out of bigotry. Based on the comment he offered though, I can’t know that. So I left the reference to the employee’s race as it might be helpful in avoiding being busted. Simple as that.

And that is how I’ve handled references to race in any Sex Listings submissions. If it is relevant to the Listing and helpful to the reader/cruiser then it stays. Most of the time references to race help guys determine what other types of men they’ll find at a particular location. And I will leave a racial reference even if it’s clearly a negative to the person commenting. For example, someone recently submitted a comment complaining about too many “dirty Mexicans” at a bookstore. Obviously the comment is motivated by some bigotry and not just a sexual preference in men. So, I took out the word “dirty” and left the rest. Sure, it’s still clearly a negative to the commentor that a lot of Mexican men were there but it’s helpful to those who are seeking out Mexican guys to hookup with (and sure, it remains helpful to those who aren’t attracted to Mexican men).

This is not about the debate over whether finding men of a particular race unattractive sexually is some sort of latent or not-so-latent bigotry. That’s a much more complicated topic (for another time and someone else because it kind of bores me). This is simply about what’s going to help a cruiser determine what sort of scene he’s going to encounter if he decides to go check out in-person one of the Listings.
